TAMPA: A VERY COMPETITIVE PLACE FOR BUSINESS

Tampa is among the three large-cities in continental US with the most competitive (lowest) cost indexes, according to a recently issued press release summarizing KPMG’s 2008 Competitive Alternatives study.  Tampa ranked second, Dallas-Fort worth third, and Atlanta first. The study measured 27 significant components including labor, taxes, real estate and utilities, which apply to 17 industries over 10 years.

Tampa benefited from very competitive labor costs (by continental US standards) and moderately low commercial and industrial real estate facility costs, while Dallas-Fort Worth was helped by very low costs in natural gas and construction.  The cost-competitiveness of Tampa and Atlanta, along with seven mid-sized and small cities in the study, contributed to the Southeast’s position as the lowest cost region in the US.

“Selecting the best site for a business operation requires balanced consideration of many factors, including business costs and environment, personnel costs, and quality of life issues” said KPMG’s Hartley Powell.  The overall Competitive Alternatives study measured business-operating costs in 136 cities in 10 countries. The full text of the study is available at www.CompetitiveAlternatives.com
